Case Study · Employer of Record and Payroll
BuzzFarm: Standing Up Compliant Payroll Before Day One
- Client: BuzzFarm
- Industry: Licensed cannabis transporter, Minnesota
- Engagement: Employer of Record and payroll
- Client since: October 2026
- Focus: Compliant payroll and employment infrastructure in place before the first load moves
BuzzFarm is a licensed cannabis transporter in Minnesota. The business comes online this week with a small crew and a short gap between holding a licence and moving a first load.
The ownership group came to Roll With Paid. with a plain ask. They wanted payroll that somebody else runs. Not software to learn, not a portal to check between stops, but a provider who takes the whole thing. They are the ones doing the work, and the hours they have are better spent on the work than on deciding which rules apply to a payroll they have not run yet.
The challenge
A new operator has no payroll history to correct. That sounds like an advantage, and in some industries it is. In licensed cannabis it means every decision gets made at once, under a licence, before anyone has run a cycle. Worker classifications, wage notices, earnings statements, the payday cadence, the records that have to be produced on request: all of it is set in the first weeks and all of it is inspectable from the first week.
A transporter also carries a particular shape of payroll. Crews move between licensed sites rather than working one. Hours run long and uneven. Driving roles sit in workers' compensation class codes that are among the more expensive an employer can carry, so putting a role in the wrong class does not produce one wrong number. It produces a wrong number on every hour that role books, compounding quietly until something forces a look.
And then there is 280E
Because cannabis remains a Schedule I substance under federal law, section 280E bars businesses that handle it from deducting ordinary business expenses. Minnesota adult-use operators are squarely in that position. The April 2026 rescheduling reached only FDA-approved and state-licensed medical marijuana, not the adult-use market this industry runs in.
Payroll is usually among the largest lines a transporter carries, which makes how that labour is recorded and classified the raw material their accountant works from. Roll With Paid. does not prepare returns and does not take tax positions. What we do is make sure the records underneath those decisions are accurate, complete, and able to withstand a look from outside.
What we’re doing
Taking the employer seat
BuzzFarm is on our Employer of Record model, so Roll With Paid. is the named W-2 employer and carries the statutory employer risk that comes with that. BuzzFarm hires who they want, manages how they want, and runs their business. Paystubs issue under our name, which also keeps their crew from being judged by where they work when they apply for a loan or a lease.
Running payroll end to end
Deposits, filings, amendments, and year-end preparation sit with us. There is no platform for the ownership group to learn and no administrative window they have to protect in a week that is already full. They tell us who worked and we handle what follows.
Building compliance in rather than onto
- Classification set at the start. Every role placed in the correct workers' compensation class and the correct exempt or non-exempt status before the first cycle, rather than corrected after one.
- Records that answer a request. Personnel files, I-9s, wage notices, and earnings statements organised to Minnesota's requirements from the first hire, because the deadline to produce them is short and does not care how new you are.
- A payday that holds. A cadence designated in advance and met, with lawful payment methods offered rather than imposed.
None of this is visible when it works. That is the point. A new operator in a licensed industry should be able to spend its attention on the operation, and the employment layer underneath should simply hold.
“We are transporters. The work is the work, and it does not stop because payroll is due. We wanted somebody who would take the whole thing, get it right from the first run, and not hand it back to us with questions. The compliance side was never going to be something we figured out between stops.”

Where BuzzFarm is headed
The crew is small today and the engagement is days old, so there is nothing yet to report in the way of results. What exists is the structure: an employer of record in place, payroll running, and records being kept correctly from the first hire rather than reconstructed later.
Transport volume in a young market tends to arrive unevenly, and headcount follows it. The arrangement BuzzFarm has now absorbs that without being rebuilt. Adding a driver is a conversation, not a project.
Starting something in this industry?
Roll With Paid. works with Minnesota cannabis licensees across cultivation, retail, manufacturing, and transport. The easiest time to get the employment side right is before the first payroll, when nothing has to be undone. If you are standing something up, we can take that part of it.
